Sunset in Wendover, UT, 9/10/12 Jan's photo |
Wind blew door shut on my hand; nothing broken; opened door myself with other hand
Desert barren almost all the way; piƱon and juniper in the high mountain passes
Few towns, small
Lots of road work
Many mining operations
Two prisons
Lunch at Rodeo Club Casino in Battle Mountain: bad food, careless service
External temp at 3 pm: 88
Mileage 28.1; typical speed 78; AC
We enjoyed the scenery, the rugged mountains rising out of the dry plains
Started clouding up about 4 pm
Motel had large outdoor pool; 21 strokes long, 9 feet deep, plus shallow side pool; Jan had good swim while Dan gassed up car
Both had dinner at Bimini Buffet, formerly the Rainforest Buffet, where we have eaten on a few previous trips; good food but weak desserts
Quality Inn barely adequate; desk too tall, task chair too low, no plugins, very noisy fridge
Discovery: Historical airfield in Wendover where they trained B29 pilots to drop atomic bombs
Motel is close to Bonneville Salt Flats; many guests were there for races or just driving on the salt flats
